Today is Five Minute Friday Blog Challenge started by Lisa-Jo Baker. Every Friday she’s post a topic then hundreds of people blog for five minutes on the topic and support each other. It is a fun way to end the week.
Truth – At the beginning on the week I did 2 posts about business planning and knowing your numbers. The truth about being an entrepreneur is that you can only be successful if you are on top of your numbers. I know so many entrepreneurs who have no idea what their numbers are; in fact they turn a blind eye to their numbers and focus on their passion for the products, services and/or customers not their bottom-line.
The truth is if you do not look after your own basic needs, i.e. enough of an income to support your lifestyle requirements then your business will not be sustainable and it will cause a great deal of stress for you and your family. If your business isn’t sustainable then you will not be able to continue to reach your clients with your products and/or services.
I see so many coaches, for example, who go into business because they are passionate about help people and yet they are not helping themselves by putting their own needs last.
Another truth is that being on top of your numbers is extremely empowering, it gives you a sense of control and inevitably you’ll be able to reach more customers. For example I’ve just started to focus on creating more value on my website and attracting more traffic. The results have been amazing, doubling, tripling my traffic week after week. The effect that has had on my business is huge. Why? Because I can see the results, I’m motivated and excited to continue. As result I’m finding that I’m bring that excitement to sales conversations and coaching sessions and I’m doing a better job overall.

There is definitely truth in making sure you are taking care of your needs, which includes knowing your numbers. Yes, I believe that if you are passionate, the numbers will follow; but if you are running a business (especially starting a business), you need to know the numbers. You need to know how to tweak your message, how to reach your target audience and what your sales are.
Clearly, there needs to be a balance, because passion is important. But certainly, it shouldn’t overshadow the business strategy and planning.
Thank you for reminding folks about that balance and about using the numbers to grow their passion as well as their bottom line.
