Ignite Your Market Challenge: Spend Your Time Wisely

By Heather Cameron 21 Comments

The Ignite Your Market Weekly Challenges’ goal are to create simple but powerful action that we can do each week to:

  • Identify our market and opportunities.
  • Connect with our client and prospects.
  • Ignite our markets and our businesses.

Time - How are you using it - compressed

I love this quote from Steve Jobs. Time is a precious resource that we can not get back.

How are you spending your “business” time? Are you working on items that you can directly relate to growing your business? Are you seeing the business results that you want?

It is very easy to spend time being busy in business, feeling like you are pouring every ounce of your energy into your business, and still not see the results you want. Why? It is simple and complex at the same time. There are so many demands on our time right now, it is easy to be really busy trying to keep up with what we “should” be doing without asking why. We are chasing the business versus planning our next step.

If you can’t track your time to one of the 7 Accelerators then why are your working on it?

The 7 Revenue Creating Accelerators are:
New Clients:
Accelerator 1: Traffic
Accelerator 2: Leads
Accelerator 3: Conversion
Value per Transaction:
Accelerator 4: Average price
Accelerator 5: Average number of items per sale
Leveraging Existing Customers:
Accelerator 6: Frequency of purchase (How often they buy)
Accelerator 7: Retention (How long you keep them as a customers)
The “plus 1” determines your profits and is:
Profit Margin = revenues – expenses
The challenge this week is to simply monitor your time and ask yourself if what you are working on will increase one of the 7 (plus 1) Accelerators. If yes, which one? If no, why are you spending your valuable time on it?

Shyla – Time is limited but it the real question is what are you doing with your time and how can you use it better?

My focus needs to be on conversion. I do well in keeping customers once they try my products. They typically keep ordering as needed plus often add more products once they have experienced the benefits. Converting my readers to customers is what I need to spend time on right now. Thank you for directing me to what I need to spend time on… it is a big help.

Pat – That is great. You have a clear objective that tracks to your bottomline and your numbers. Love it, looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Uggg…dang it, this is something I so struggle with…numbers have felt like the “enemy” that I’m doing it “wrong” so this is a process I’m continuing to teach myself and understand so I can continue to improve! Thanks for the reminders!

    Laugh lots, Love more!

MamaRed – thank you for being honest about that. It actually is giving me ideas for further blogs, free give away and product ideas. I see so many who are hate numbers or are intimidated by them. I’d love to help them make their numbers work for them.

Great post, Heather! This is especially important for those of us that work from home. I find it easier to waste time if we are not careful. I value my time and have learned how to best manage it…and always open to re-evaluating it. 🙂

Alexandra – working from home adds in a number of different challenges. I do believe it is ok to take advantage of them but at the same time keep your “eye on the prize”.

Yes – time is truly the most valuable commodity. I have to reevaluate how I am spending my time and if there is a “return on investment” or if I just spinning my wheels.

Ines – that exactly it. Is it a return on investment that you can see. It doesn’t have to be money directly, it could be traffic but has to be something you can measure.

Caroline – Thank you for commenting. Try tracking your time for a day or two and see what the results are. Then make corrections.

My late husband always said Time is Money. And he had plenty of both!! It takes a lot of chutzpah to figure this out, but it works.

Tina – Time is Money – your late husband was right. We forget what we are worth. Many business owners don’t track their time and don’t account for it as part of the business expense. When you do it can really change how you look at your business.

Meryl – thanks. It is important to think how you time tracks to your numbers. It is a useful self check on what you are doing.
