Techie Tip – Create and Manage Your Brand Colors with Abode Kuler

By Heather Cameron 6 Comments

Brand Consistency Colors Brand Consistency – Colours/Colors

As a business owners it is important that we create a consistent brand. There are many elements to creating a consistent brand and one of them is the colours you use.

Have you decided on the colours that you want to use for your company’s and/or products’ brands? Do you know the hex or RBG (Red, blue, green) codes for all of the colours in your brands?

My Favorite Colour/Color Tool: Adobe Kuler

I want to share with you one of my favorite tools called Adobe Kuler. It is a powerful tool that can be used to create consistent colours for your company’s and/or products’ brand across your website (banner, background colours, text, etc), documentation, business cards and any other print material.

Here is a short video demonstrating the power of Adobe Kuler and how simple and fun it is to use. The sound quality is a bit rough but you can hear the instructions on how to use the tool.

Note: You are required to create an Adobe account to upload images or save your schemes.

To summaries; Abode Kuler allows you to do the following in order to create your colour scheme/theme for consistency across your brand and/or products:

  1. Create your own colour scheme/theme from scratch
  2. Choice a colour scheme/theme from an extensive library
  3. Upload a picture and pull out the colours that occur naturally in nature
  4. If you don’t know the codes for your existing colours you can upload an image, for example your logo or website banner, and discover the colour codes.

It is important that you know your hex and RBG codes; particularly if you are outsource a design or print order, as colours can appear differently on different monitors, printers and design applications. For example, when I outsourced the design of my banner for this website I sent them the link to my Adobe Kuler colour theme so there was no going back and forth on the colours. I use the RBG codes in designing all my presentations and documents in Microsoft Office and use the hex codes for anything on my website.

Well that is it, I hope you find Adobe Kuler fun and useful to use. Now that you know how to do it, how can use it?

Great tutorial Heather. I remember using Adobe Kuler a while ago; however, forgot all about it. I agree that it is a fun tool to use.

It is a fun tool and it can help refresh a website and still stay true to your brand colours. It makes it really easy to find lighter and darker shades or complementary colours.

Joyce: It is fun. I particular like uploading images that I’m drawn to because of the colours and then creating a colour scheme from it.
