Today is Five Minute Friday Blog Challenge started by Lisa-Jo Baker. Every Friday she’s post a topic then hundreds of people blog for five minutes on the topic and support each other. It is a fun way to end the week.
Tree – One of the strengths or skills an entrepreneur needs to master is the ability to see both the forest and the trees at the same time. The forest is the big picture, the “why” we are doing what we are doing, the “where” we are going and the overall health of our businesses.
The trees are all the moving parts, from the little seedlings to the mature trees. The seedlings are the new things, like a new client or new marketing campaign. The mature trees are the big items like day-to-day operations, accounting, long term clients, product management and service delivery.
If we focus only the on the forest and ignore the trees then our business will quickly go off track. I’ve seen businesses fail because they weren’t on top on their cash flow or they lost clients because they weren’t paying attention to them.
On the other hand if we focus too much on the trees then the overall vision of our business gets lost; we lose our way and we miss important changes, we become absorbed in the day to day and we forget to work on our businesses.
Successful entrepreneurs keep their minds on the forest and know what is going on with the trees, whether they are working at the tree level or not. They still keep their eyes o the bottom line of their businesses and hire great people to manage the day-to-day.
Where is your mind natural at? The forest or the trees? How do you ensure that you are on top of both?

Great thoughts! I have had multiple home businesses over the past few years, and no, I’m not great at balancing everything. I tend to think of customers and products, but am bad at remembering to keep track of receipts and expenses and details like that.
