This Week’s Ignite Your Market Challenge: Less is More
This week I was reminded when working with a client of one of the important business truths -“Less is More”. I was so excited about what she wants to accomplish that I overwhelmed her with too much information. She loved the information; however, when she started working on it, she didn’t know where to start. Fortunately, she talked to me about it and we were easily able to simplify it and provide her with her first steps.
As a business coach, advisor, and owner, I know simplification or “Less is More” is what really creates amazing results, but sometimes I forget that when I’m in the moment and helping a client. I also know that because I love what I do, I love helping others see their business potential that I can get carried away and overwhelm them. So I have to learn to keep telling myself “Less is More”. “Less is More”.
As a business owner, I know in today’s world of instant information, people are overwhelmed with everything coming at them. I need to remind myself that “Less is More” as I develop my marketing material and my programs. I also need to remind myself that “Less is More” in how I choose to run my business. I need to ask myself where I can simplify things so that I run a better business, not only for my clients but for myself.
Where in your business does that happen? Where could you simplify things and apply the “Less is More” idea? What would be the result if you did?
The challenge this week is to pick one thing in your business where doing “less” would provide “more” value to your clients, your market, and/or your business. It could be working with a client, an internal process, networking or how you manage social media. Think about what “Less is More” looks like in practice and implement one change towards creating less and simplifying your business.

I am all about simplifying but sometimes it is hard to chop things down enough to feel you have adequately described a thing – especially for us otherwise wordy people!
Heather Cameron says
Sharon – Yes, it is hard. I think better we do at it the better we serve our clients. I know in my case that is true. Thanks for commenting.

I have the same problem. In my excitement to tell people all about the nutritional supplements I have used since 1984 I overwhelm them with too much info. I really need to remember the KISS method… keep it simple, stupid. Yes, less is most often more. Important to remember.
Heather Cameron says
Pat – It is really the KISS method. So important for us to go at the pace of our clients and not let our own excitement drive up.

Very timely and gave me quite a chuckle since I tend to do the same thing…get all excited and enthused and seeing all the possibilities (for whatever reason my brain is wired to see how to use content a million ways from Sunday). Backing it down, simplifying, is something I love doing…even tho’ I forget!
Thanks for the reminder
Laugh lots, Love more!

MamaRed – I think we all do when we love what we are doing and we forget what it was like to be a beginner in something. It is interesting because tweets about this post are very popular, so I think this is hits home for many people. Thanks for stopping by.

So very true…it’s definitely a challenge to remember what it was like to be a beginner at “whatever” so you can teach things well. One of the things I did a lot of when I did tech documentation full time. And it takes a specific mindset to put yourself in their place!
Have a good one!
Heather Cameron says
MamaRed – That is such a great piece of advice. To be the beginner again, to remember that small steps are what they are looking for. Thanks for the reminder, timely as I put together a new program. 🙂

Thanks Heather for this great article! I try to minimize what I need to do for my business but with my site being new and I had a very rough start trying to learn and understand what I was doing became a BIG challenge . It is slowly getting better but not sure how I can incorp. your “Less is More” at this time. I feel most of the time overwhelmed or the feeling of being lost. There is so much to learn and understand. I am not the best person at writing blogs or even using the computer to the fullest. But I will try to incorp your theory as much as possible. Thanks again for sharing!
Heather Cameron says
Barbara – I think Less is More is really important when you are starting out. Setting realistic targets for your business versus doing what everyone is telling you to do. Focus on what your end goals are and the best way to reach them. Less is More always applies, which is a lesson I’m learning. Thanks for sharing and being open.

Thanks, Heather, for such important tips on how to ignite the market challenges.

Heather I completely know where you are coming from. I have this problem when I’m trying to coach a person to change their posture running. I get so excited when they accomplish the next step, I tend to want to tell them the next BUNCH of steps instead of taking it slow and moving to just the next step.
Heather Cameron says
Gilly – that is another great example. Less is More – applies to so many different parts of our businesses and types of business. Thanks for sharing a great example.

Today we put in our Christmas window. Yes, a flower shop that hasn’t had Christmas in the window yet is thinking, gee, let’s get through Thanksgiving first. But today, quite frankly, we ran out of room for the prep of Christmas, so we decided to put in the window. Our window isn’t large, and usually it gets over-jammed with all kinds of “stuff”. NOT THIS TIME. This time we decided Less is More. We put p a 4″ white Christmas tree with lights. Next to that we put a 2 shelf rack (also white) and 9 Christmas items (Santa, a sleigh, a couple bears, an ornament, all dressed up in red and white and gold and silver). And a tin soldier watches over all them. That’s all. Considering the way our window usually looks, with garland and bells and berries and trains and trees and ornaments and holly and nativities and snowmen, in this case I’m happy to say Less is More. Thanks for being so timely!
Heather Cameron says
Tina – that is great hear. I’d love to hear how that works out for you over the holiday time. We have so much come at us, particularly at Christmas, it should be refreshing to see you window. Good luck with it.

I have been rethinking how to make a change in one of my products. Your posts helps me to clarify exactly what I want to do. The Mantra “less is more” totally captures how I want to rework my product. When I created it I tried to put too much into it because I wanted to give so much. Now in redoing it I recognize that I will need to modulate better and have it be less in order to not overwhelm people. Thanks.
Heather Cameron says
Ines – I so understand, I’m in doing the same. We love what we do and we want to help so we give and give but we give too much too fast. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Heather –
You are very right. Less is more. I would say my last few years of online marketing, I tried to do everything and anything. I’m glad to say this year, I’ve trimmed down at least 70% of the stuff that doesn’t matter and the results in my business have skyrocketed!
Heather Cameron says
Nate, your success is a great case of why less is more. Thanks so much for sharing that!!
